Yateley in the 1991 Census

The 1991 Census provides a snapshot of what Yateley was like, and enables a comparison with the rest of Hart District and also with Fleet. The following analysis was carried out to support the Yateley Society's case in objecting to housing development on the fields at Cobbett Lane, Yateley in 1994.
It shows that, even compared with the rest of Hart District (itself a highly car dependent District), Yateley is particularly dependent on car travel because it is a dormitory town deficient in employment opportunities. It is correspondingly deficient in shopping, especially comparison shopping, recreational and leisure facilities. There is no railway station. The 1994 planning guidance (PPG 13) now requires, for the first time, planning decisions to be made which will tend to reduce reliance on the private car. Yateley's car dependence therefore makes it an unsuitable place for the location of further housing development compared with other locations in Hart District. However simply adding more employment is likely only to result in more car-based “criss-cross” trips, since Yateley’s accessibility by modes other than car is poor.
