The Yateley Society's Local Historians will be attached to the central Project Management Group. Assistance will be given in finding the various names of the estate developers and in dating the building of the estates.
The Local History Group are carrying out comprehensive research into the period from 1945 to the present day, as part of their normal activities.
They will be trying to answer questions such as:
* Why was Yateley selected for such substantial post-war development?
* Why was Yateley allowed to develop at a faster growth rate than many planned New Towns?
* Was there ever an overall spatial plan for Yateley?
* Why did Yateley only acquire shopping facilities by means of Planning Appeals?
Area Assessors will probably be able to obtain the names of estate development companies, dates of construction, names of the developers' standard house designs, and such like, from residents who moved into their homes when the estates were originally built.
The Local History Research Group will attempt to obtain back-up documentation for each estate from Record Offices, and Local Authority planning files. The History Group will also consider making Oral History recordings of residents who moved into the newly built estates. Relevant information will be abstracted from these recording before passing them on the Wessex Film & Sound Archives for permanent storage.
An example of how the Society's Local History Group can help
The Society's Local History Group has a good number of old maps which will help establish when estates were built. The link below is to a map rescued from a skip when the Village Hall was refurbished in the 1980s. It was probably latterly used by the Yateley Residents Association to track the names of streets in new developments.
