Village Design Framework Workshop

Held at St Swithins Parish Hall 18 September 2004

The purpose of the workshop was to develop the Yateley Village Design Framework (YVDF), enabling a wide range of participants (as required by Hart District Council to provide evidence of 'reach' of consultation) to develop responses to the issues highlighted by local people as being important to their quality of life in Yateley. The outcomes of the workshop were intended to inform the preparation of the draft Village Design Framework (YVDF) document to cover the whole of the civil parish. This was at a time it had been proposed that Hart District Council would adopt the YVDF document as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).

The Workshop was organised by the Yateley Town Centre Management Group. Kent Architecture Centre (KAC) were invited to facilitate the event on their behalf. KAC did this as part of the Building in Context Toolkit Programme, an initiative funded by English Heritage to help deliver better design solutions in historic areas across the South East Region. Yateley was chosen by English Heritage as one of their main projects.

A good summary of the workshop, and the processes followed, can be found on the buildings in context website

As a result of the fast changing evolution of the modern planning system, the Yateley Village Design Framework is now concentrating efforts at achieving its original objectives: to find solutions to design issues for the centre of the town along Reading Road from the Hall Lane roundabout to the Cricket Hill roundabout. Design issues for wider Yateley are now being handled by character assessments being carried out by teams organised by the Yateley Society.

Nevertheless the outcomesfrom this full-day workshop are an important link in the public participation history of the Yateley Parish Plan. In fact the major outcome of this workshop was the decision to set up a Parish Plan Steering Group to use the outcomes to prepare a Parish Plan for the entirety of the Civil Parish.
