Yateley Town Centre Draft Consultative Plan, March 1985
This is the first Yateley Town Centre Plan produced by Hart District Council. It was produced at the instruction of the Inspector at the First Local Plan Inquiry at the request of the Yateley Society. Published as a draft on March 1984, it was roundly rejected by the community. A new Town Centre Plan was published in December 1985. It is still very instructive to compare these two Town Centre Plans since it explains the current situation in the commercial area between Plough Road and Sandhurst Road.
The main proposal of this first Hart Plan was:
"PROPOSAL A1: It is proposed that Area A (ie Yateley Manor Preparatory School) be comprehensively redeveloped for shopping, offices and community purposes with associated public car parking and servicing."
Yateley Manor School had not be consulted prior to the publication of the Plan, and the Council had failed to take into account that the school was a regsitered charity. At a public meeting in Yateley Village Hall in May 1984 the school stated it did not intend to move, and was very concerned that the existence of the Plan might cause parents to withdraw their pupils, perhaps with disastrous financial consequences. The general public voted at the meeting to reject the Plan.

Public outcry scuppers scheme
A new Yateley town centre plan is to be drawn up following the public's outcry over the original. Hart councillors siad there was little point in making any judgment on the present draft plan since it had proved very unpopular with local residents. They said the only way ahead would be to go back to the drawing board and start again.
One of the main bones of contention was the redevelopment of Yateley Manor School into a large shopping precinct. Residents reacted angrily to the proposal and voice they concern at a public meeting in May.
Speaking at a recreation and amenties committee meeting Coun. John Stocks said members should make their comments when a new draft centre plan for Yateley had been made
"It is nonsense to talk about this plan and make comments on it when the public has rejected it wholeheartedly."

Town centre blueprint scrapped
Hart planners have been forced to scrap theit blueprint for Yateley town centre. The reponse to the draft was so bad that the district council will have to start afresh. During the six-week period for public consultation, copies were put on sale and a publicity leaflet outlining the main proposals was distributed.
Around 110 local residents also attended a public meeting to air their objections to the plan, after an exhibition of the proposals was held at Yateley library and the village hall.
Members of Hart's policy committee agreed that further detailed consideration and a number of major changes were needed to satify the public. A new deatiled report is to be submitted to the planning policy committee meeting on August 20.
